2013 Season

The 2013 season started well for English Setters.  Conditions at every trial appeared to be tricky with very cold dry east winds being the general order of the day.  Quite a few trials were cancelled but our breed fared very well in the ones which went ahead.  In some trials English Setters had a clean sweep of the awards – full Spring 2013 results can be found below.

Under Kennel Club Rules, the Irish English Setters again did really well with Gerald Devine taking a 1-2 in the Ulster Irish Red Setter Club’s Open Stake at Murley Mt in Co Tyrone. 1st with his ESD FTCh Ballyellen Cody and 2nd with Cody’s sister Bill Connolly’s Ballyellen Cara, who Gerald trained and competes with. The same dogs featured highly on the Scottish Spring Open circuit with Gerald taking 2 out of the 3 Open Stakes that were run. Ballyellen Cara achieved her GB FTCh title with a win at the Pointer Club of Scotland’s Open Stake at Cawdor Estate and Gerald also claimed the Scottish Field Trial Association’s Open Stake with his 16 month old Gortinreagh Eppie, who also achieved her title with this win – perhaps the youngest FTCh to date ????

Gerald’s 2013 continued with great success. He ended the year with 9 different dogs regularly in the awards and ended up with the tally of:

3 Puppy stakes (Gortinreagh Flyer, Gortinreagh Excel & Gortinreagh Eric) and the prestigious British Puppy Derby (FTCh Gortinreagh Eppie),

1 Novice stake (Gortinreagh Excel) and

12 Open wins (FTCh Gortinreagh Eppie, FTCh Gortinreagh Dixie, FTCh Ballyellen Cody, FTCh Ballyellen Cara and Gortinreagh Excel).

3 dogs he ran (Dixie, Cara and Eppie) gained their British titles, thus proving that setters from the Emerald Isle can compete with great success against the best in their native land.

A high point of the year in Ireland was English Setters taking the top 2 positions at the Irish Championship at the end of August.

The Irish Setter and Pointer Championship which was held at the end of August 2013 saw an English Setter One-Two.  George Forbes’ Ballyellen Moss bred by Bill Connolly and a brother of Gerald Devine’s FTCh Ballyellen Cody and Bill’s own FTCh Ballyellen Cara triumphed after 2 days competition held at Kinnitty, Co Offaly.  It was testament to the quality of this litter that the dog named most stylish dog of the first day was Gerald’s FTCh Ballyellen Cody – so the brothers dominated the 2 days.  Kieran Walsh was runner-up with his very consistent FTCh Blackstairs Geronimo, bred by Christy Davitt of Wexford.

2013 Season
The 2013 season has got off to a good start for the breed in the Irish Trials. Several Opens have had all awards going to English Setters and FTCh Ballyellen Cody has continued his winning ways in the North by bagging the UlsterIrish Red Setter Club’s Spring Open Stake in Co Tyrone with his sister Ballyellen Cara also taking runner-up spot.
Unfortunately things haven’t gone so well for The English Setter Club of Ireland itself, as the Spring Open, scheduled for Sunday 10th March had to be cancelled due to a very hard frost and the threat of snow. This is the second successive year this Trial has been lost due to the weather.

Summer confined 1st and 2nd

Billy Grace makes Capparoe Tork into a FTCh with his win in the Summer 2013 Confined stake. George Forbes with Ballyellen Moss is runner-up.

TORK
The Summer proved kinder for the English Setter Club Trials in 2013 and the Confined Stake kicked off the Summer Circuit in Ireland on 1st August.
The English Setter Club held it’s Summer Confined stake on 1st August 2013 on the Wicklow Mountain National Park. Judges for the day were Mr. Jim Crotty and Mr Pat Rohan.
There was a plentiful supply of game with several chances in both rounds. Ten dogs were selected for the second round. On a day where rain and fog threatened, the judges did very well to have the trial over at 2. 30 pm
The second round saw excellent finds for Billy Grace’s ESD ‘Capparoe Tork’ on a single grouse after provocation from his bracemate, and George Forbes’ ESD’ Ballyellen Moss.’ There were other chances that were not taken.
The result was 1st Excellent Capparoe Tork and 2nd Excellent Ballyellen Moss. Senior Judge Jim Crotty in his summation of the trial commented on the high standard of dog work throughout the trial.
The main difference between first and second he felt was the production of game. Club Chairman Paddy Peoples thanked the judges and Red Mills for their sponsorship of the event. Congratulations to Billy as this win made Capparoe Tork a Field Trial Champion.
